A free SEO strategy session with a senior agency owner sounds suspicious by default.
It should.
Most "free strategy sessions" online are sales calls dressed up as a favour — a 5-minute diagnosis followed by 25 minutes of "and here's how we can help."
So why do I genuinely give them away, every week, no card to book, no upsell?
There's a business reason and an honest reason. Both are real. This article covers both — and then makes the case for why, if your rankings or your backlink profile is stuck, you should take the call.

The business reason I give away free SEO strategy sessions
The honest commercial truth first.
A free strategy session is the highest-converting top-of-funnel channel my agency has.
The math is simple. About one in four free SEO strategy sessions turns into a Goldie Agency engagement. Of those, the average client stays 18-24 months. The unit economics of a 30-minute call producing those outcomes is genuinely hard to beat with any paid channel.
So yes — strategy sessions are commercial for me. I'm not pretending otherwise.
But here's the part most agencies miss: the math only works if the call is genuinely useful, regardless of whether it leads to a sale.
If I spend the call pitching, the conversion rate drops, the referrals dry up, and the channel collapses.
If I spend the call diagnosing, people walk away helped — and they remember. Some hire us that month. Some hire us six months later. Some refer their friend. Some come back when their next site needs help.
The honest call is the marketing.
The honest reason — I actually like doing them
Beyond the business case, I genuinely enjoy the calls.
Most of my agency work is in deep on accounts I've been running for years.
Strategy sessions are a different rhythm. New site, new problem, 30 minutes to figure out the biggest lever. It's the closest thing to a working diagnostic puzzle in my week.
I learn from them too. Patterns across hundreds of free SEO strategy sessions a year is how I spot what's actually working in 2026 — across niches, across competitor sets, across SaaS / ecom / content sites.
That insight feeds back into the agency, into my Link Building Mastery book, into the SEO Elite Circle, and into every other thing I make.
So the calls are commercial AND honestly useful for me. Both things can be true.
What the call actually covers when it's about backlinks
This site is the Backlink Blueprint — so most of the people who book a strategy session through here have a specific backlink question.
Common ones:
- "We've been doing link building for 12 months and our DR has barely moved. Why?"
- "Our competitors have 3x our referring domains. How do we close that gap?"
- "Should we keep doing outreach or move to digital PR?"
- "We hired a link-building agency and the placements look sketchy. What do we do?"
- "Is our anchor text distribution going to get us penalised?"
- "Can you white-label backlinks for us?"
If any of those is your question, the call is built for you.
We'll open Ahrefs (or whatever tool you use), walk your referring domain profile, compare it to your top 3 competitors, find the gap, and identify the specific play to close it.
If you don't have Ahrefs, that's fine — I'll share my screen.
Where free strategy sessions go wrong (and how I avoid those mistakes)
I've been on the receiving end of dozens of "free SEO strategy sessions" before I started running my own.
The five most common ways they go wrong:
1. The call is 5 minutes of diagnosis and 25 minutes of pitch. Solution: I have a hard rule that the pitch never starts before minute 22.
2. The advice is generic. "Build more backlinks. Improve your content. Fix your technical SEO." Useless. Solution: every recommendation I give on a call has to be specific to the site we're looking at, with a concrete next action.
3. The agency rep isn't actually senior. You booked thinking you'd talk to the founder; you got a junior SDR. Solution: when you book with me, you get me. Not a junior. Not "Julian's team." Me.
4. There's no follow-up unless you said yes on the call. No diagnosis email, no summary, nothing. Solution: every call gets a written recap within 24 hours, regardless of whether you hire us.
5. The "free" call requires a credit card. Solution: no card to book mine. Genuinely free.
If a free SEO strategy session you're considering anywhere else fails on any of these five, that's the call you skip.
What you should bring to make 30 minutes worth your time
The leaner you arrive, the more I can give you.
What helps:
- View or live access to your Google Search Console
- Your domain and 2-3 competitor domains you actually care about
- One sentence on what success looks like (not "more traffic" — what does more traffic mean for revenue?)
- A specific bottleneck if you've got one ("we're stuck on this keyword" / "our DR isn't moving" / "our outreach reply rate dropped")
What doesn't help:
- A 40-slide deck about your company history
- A list of 200 keywords you want me to evaluate
- Three colleagues who all want to weigh in on every recommendation
If you're not sure what counts as a real bottleneck vs noise, the how-to-do-an-SEO-audit framework is a good 20-minute prep before the call.
When the answer is "you don't need an agency"
About 30% of the free SEO strategy sessions I run end with me saying "you don't need us — here's what I'd do yourself."
Common reasons:
- You're early stage and the lever is content volume + basic link building, not full-service SEO
- You've got a small but capable in-house team that just needs a senior steer (not a delivery partner)
- Your real bottleneck is product or conversion, not traffic
- Your budget doesn't justify a full retainer yet — better to DIY for 6 months and revisit
When that happens, I point you at the right free resource — usually the Link Building Mastery book, the Backlink Blueprint breakdown for DIY link work, or the SEO Elite Circle for the peer network — and you go your way.
This is the call I trust myself most on. Telling someone they don't need us means they trust me when they DO need us, a year or two later. That's the long game.
What happens if we ARE a fit
If we're a fit to work together, the second half of the call covers it.
I'll tell you:
- What scope I'd recommend
- The retainer tier (we have three — covered in SEO retainer pricing if you want to know the bands before the call)
- When we could realistically start
- What you'd see in the first 30, 60, 90 days
I send a follow-up email within 24 hours with a written summary + the proposed retainer + next steps. If you want it, you reply. If not, no follow-up sequences, no nurture emails.
Easy in. Easy out. That's how it should work.
What this has to do with backlinks specifically
You're reading this on the Backlink Blueprint site, which exists for one reason: backlinks are usually the lever that actually moves rankings.
The five-node link acquisition system I outline on this site — covered in detail in the how to get high-quality backlinks post — is the same system we run on Goldie Agency client accounts.
A free SEO strategy session is the fastest way to find out whether that system applies to your site, and what the specific play would look like in your niche.
If you're already convinced backlinks are your bottleneck and just want them built, book the call and we'll skip straight to talking through a backlink retainer.
If you're not sure backlinks are the bottleneck, the call will tell you in the first 10 minutes.

FAQ — free SEO strategy session (backlinks angle)
Is the call really free or is it a sales pitch?
Genuinely free. No card to book. The pitch never starts before minute 22, and only if you ask about working together. About 70% of the calls end with me telling people what to do without us.
Can we focus the whole call on backlinks?
Yes. If your main question is backlinks — outreach, digital PR, anchor text, link velocity, white-label, whatever — we'll spend the 30 minutes there. Tell me when you book.
Will you actually look at our Ahrefs profile live?
Yes. If you've got Ahrefs or Semrush, share access for 30 minutes. If not, I'll share my screen and pull the data myself.
What if you tell me our existing link building agency is doing junk work?
I will, if it's true. Telling you the truth about your current vendor is part of the job. I'll back it with the specific URLs that look problematic so you can verify after.
Do you white-label link building for other agencies?
Yes — covered in detail in the white-label link building piece. If that's why you want the call, mention it when you book and we'll spend the call talking through fit and pricing.
How fast can I book?
Usually 5-10 business days out. If something's on fire (manual penalty, sudden drop), email me first and I'll see if I can fit you in faster.

The reason I keep giving away free SEO strategy sessions is also the reason you should keep booking them — when the diagnosis is honest and the next step is clear, both sides win.
